As part of efforts to improve the capability of forest area monitoring systems in several tropical countries, the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) together with Ecometrica has initiated Forests 2020 designed to be implemented for three years to support REDD + activities, Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT ), Aspects of forest governance and biodiversity conservation. This activity is part of the International Partnership Program (IPP), which aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation by 2020, and promote improved forest governance and well-being of forest communities.

The selected countries to implement Forests 2020 activities are: Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Ghana and Kenya.

In general, this activity has three main focuses, namely:

  1. Increased capability to detect and measure changes in forest cover, particularly forest degradation occurring on a small scale in a cloud-covered area persistently;
  2. Ability to identify areas prone to forest fires and under pressure to convert, or areas of primary target for forest restoration, so that existing interventions and resources can be allocated efficiently;
  3. Development of digital infrastructure to improve access and processing of satellite imagery, as well as the ability to disseminate forest monitoring information to users.
